The Department of Veterans Affairs implemented the Veterans Community Care Program in June 2019—replacing similar programs that allow eligible veterans to receive care from non-VA providers. Studies show that Veterans have unique health care needs and benefit from being treated by providers that have a basic understanding of military culture. These standards will guide when veterans can seek the care necessary to meet their needs, whether it is with VA or outside community providers.

Community care is based on specific eligibility requirements, availability of VA care, and the needs and circumstances of individual Veterans.
Veterans Crisis Line: Through the CCN, Veterans have access to regional networks of high-performing, licensed health care providers who work together with the VA to ensure Veterans receive timely, high-quality care in the right setting.
Through this network, VA medical staff can authorize and schedule care from a community care provider with the Veteran's approval. In-person care where Veterans visit a local VA facility; In-person community care where Veterans see a provider in their community; Telehealth where Veterans connect over video with their VA providers. If your provider does not accept assignment, you can still see that provider, but be aware that you will likely have to pay the entire charge at the time of service.
