Duncan Tonatiuh (toh-nah-tyou) is the author and illustrator of four picture books: Dear Primo: A Letter to My Cousin, Diego Rivera: His World and Ours, Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote: A Migrant’s Tale and Separate Is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez and Her Family’s Fight for Desegragation. He was born in Mexico City and grew up in San Miguel de Allende. He graduated from Parsons The New School for Design and from Eugene Lang College in New York City in 2008. Mexican-American author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh was influenced by ancient Mexican art, but he uses modern technology innovatively to “color” in his drawings. Inspired by the Mixtec codex, Tonatiuh’s art bridges the cultural divide between the Latino experience in Latina America, the United States and all intersections in between. His older brother, a teacher, taught Lupe how to read and write, and seeing how well he drew, helped him enroll in art classes. His aim is to create images that honor the past, but that address contemporary issues that affect people of Mexican origin on both sides of the border.
