Great is our God. God, in return, rewards them with great blessings. Ruth’s response is extraordinary, for she is under no obligation to care for Naomi, just as Naomi, with her own extraordinary response, is under no obligation to provide for Ruth. Like I said before, the book of Ruth is just like a Biblical, better version of the Grapes of Wrath.

For wherever you go, I will go. The Book of Ruth is an important historical work in Hebrew Scripture, our Old Testament of the Bible, as it traces the The references in the Book of Ruth to Rachel, Leah and Tamar serve not only to welcome Ruth into the Judahite community by linking her with the mothers of that community, they especially lead us to view Ruth in the mold of the heroic women who ensured the preservation of the people of Israel.

Tamar bears twins, Perez and Zerah, after she masquerades as a prostitute to seduce her father-in-law, Judah, who had failed to fulfill his promise to give her his youngest son Shelah as a husband after his two older sons had died while married to her (Genesis 38). Many authors date it early in the monarchy, and valid arguments can be presented for that position. The story of Tamar and Judah is also a story of family continuity achieved by the determination of a woman. I’m not sure how many people know this, but God decided to give Ruth a HUGE honor. Loved it so much.

Accepting the death of your loved ones may be difficult, but just like Job, we must say: Job 1:21-22: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb,     and naked I will depart. 20 And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead.

22 And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any other field. There, in the field of Boaz, several patterns converge.

A Moabite was always a Moabite, wherever he or she lived.

22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest. She urges Ruth and Orpah to remain in Moab with their parental families.

Far from being peripheral to the main narrative sequence of the Bible, Ruth dramatizes its principal theme: the continuity of this people in their land. 19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,

Ruth remains with Naomi, while the realistic Orpah accepts Naomi’s reasoning that the daughters‑in‑law need not become refugees in turn. He decided to give her the honor of being on the royal bloodline of our Lord Jesus Christ! I found this reflection helpful, good reminder that Our God is ever present, ever mindful of the needs, circumstances and desires of each of us. And time and history place another dimension into this pattern: the covenant of love between Boaz and Ruth reminded the people Israel, in times of exile and need, that a similar covenant exists and continues between Israel and God.

Ruth had what in Biblical terms is defined as “empty hands”(poor), nothing to offer God, was extremely needy, and yet our beautiful Lord filled her with a myriad of blessings.

Following the death of her husband, Elimelech, and her two sons, Naomi decided to leave Moab, where her family had fled to escape famine.

And they sat down. I thought according to the Hebrew the phase “uncovered his feet meant something more salacious. And indeed, Ruth is referred to throughout the story as “the Moabitess.” But from Ruth’s point of view, she is becoming an Israelite.

There is one big spiritual truth behind a passage like this.

When the story opens, Naomi’s sons have just died.

4 They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. Finally, redemption is an underlying theme in the book of Ruth. Just like Isaiah 28:21 states: The Lord will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim,     he will rouse himself as in the Valley of Gibeon— to do his work, his strange work,     and perform his task, his alien task.

I’m also divorced. Elimelech, Naomi, and their two sons become refugees in an alien land, losing all rights and status in fleeing from a famine — a major disaster in their homeland. Ruth, a foreigner to Israelite society, even becomes an ancestor of the royal line of Israel’s Messiah.

And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her parched corn, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left. Ruth’s poetic words, “Wherever you go, I will go, wherever you lodge, I will lodge,” are rightly famous, both for their beauty of expression and for their sentiment. The opening paragraph (Ruth 1:1), with a marvelous economy of words, sets the stage: The characters are presented, the situation is clear. It was then that Naomi decided to return back home to the land of Judah. I feel old and abandoned.
