It's a growing up story from the 60's but very violent. I first read this in 1975, at the beach (my older sister had picked up the paperback at the corner store) and, at 12 years of age, I thought this was the greatest book I had ever read.

It reads with youthful exuberance. In a episodic set of interlinked stories Price so effectively conjures up this group of friends moving towards adulthood.

But there is also competition, in terms of sports such as football and bowling. That’s the common thread running through many of the book’s seemingly unconnected plotlines: Buddy growing closer to his girlfriend Despie, Perry dealing with the loss of his mother, Joey needing to escape from his abusive father, etc.

Oddly enough, this coming of age novel set in the Bronx of the early 60s is pretty true to my own experience in the suburbs of North Florida. Now, re-reading it after 40 years and thousands of other novels later, this is still my all-time favorite. The main protagonists may be unashamedly violent, but they are also full of shame and fear.
