Good review, I haven't heard this enough to form an opinion on it but it would probably be around a 3. So we will just ignore it, Album Rating: 4.0You take Highly Suspicious off of this album and it heads from a 3-3.5 to a solid 4+ for me, that song licks balls. Generally favorable reviews- based on 73 Ratings, A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote. MMJ have taken some artistic risks with this album and unfortunately none of the experimentation works.

My favorite moment on the album and the first time I really lost motor control of my extremities and just had to start moving my feet and head came during “Highly Suspicious”, which initially channels 80s Hip Hop before it drops heavy guitar distortion on every down beat.

(Excuse a brief aside: When you’re jamming to a song on the train and you’re getting weird looks from someone who is dressed like a dominatrix, it gives you pause to reevaluate things.). The vocals are a cast of two different characters and the dichotomy between James’ high pitched hero and the low growl of the antagonist helps to frame the story that the lyrics are telling, which hints at governmental paranoia and deep Orwellian themes. For those with a more trained ear, the departures are a natural next step from what the band started to explore on Z.
Some songs bog the album down, especially in the middle section (Thank you too, Sec Walkin') but the ending and most of the beginning make up for the missteps. These new sounds are countered by a familiar jam section that one can easily see being extended by many minutes in a live performance. While some have criticized the sound of Evil Urges as being too diverse and lacking in focus, I find it actually does a perfect job of capturing the magic of MMJ: namely, the band's ability to shape-shift on the fly, offering disparate sounds that are nonetheless compelling and always anchored by Jim James' incomparable voice. the second and third last paragraphs. I thought that some of the tracks were very 50's, which i didn't like, but all in all it was pretty good, I have only heard highly suspicious and i thought it was awesome : /. The song ends with an abrupt scream from all members of the band which could be construed as a cathartic release of the stress and conflict most groups of artists endure when collaborating on a single piece of art. Album Rating: 2.5Highly Suspicious is definitely the worst song on here, but it's also simultaneously the most interesting song on here. It's a grower though, and once it grabs you you'll realize the brilliance. Listening to an album for the first time with too analytical an approach can be a different and sometimes unnatural journey, one that could have you question your heading and check your course an exorbitant number of times, missing the scenery while your head is stuck in the map.

Now, it's one of my favorites!! If you had any interest in the band before now, hopefully you can appreciate how they are trying to expand their sound. The album closes with an 8 minute electronica inspired opus called “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Part 2”.

Taken on its own Z could have been a fluke, a blip on the radar, a simple diversion from their core sound; but Evil Urges only gets better and weirder, and it proves that Z was none of those things. This album is somewhat stylistically fractured track by track and could be described as struggling with its own identity; however, it is best navigated as a whole work, whose risky and artful contrasts serve to give the audience a sense of what the band is capable of, and potentially what they have in store for the listener in the future, a sonic warning shot across our collective bow. Such a shame though, as a "Z' was clearly one of the finest albums of the 00's, This is the far and away the worst thing I've heard in years. I had to defend 'Robbers & Cowards' on multiple occasions, I'm yet to run into someone who enjoys the follow up.

it's one of the more interesting and attention grabbing tracks. I won't deny that it isn't as listenable as Z, but its definitely not average. The rest of this isn't exactly offensively bad or anything.
