Thinking this was a dark satirical comedy about the publishing industry, I kept reading, enjoying the villainy of the "mentor," Connecticut prep school English prof William, who develops an obsessive and dangerous fixation on his former student, now an insufferable editor at a big publishing house. It's easily the best thriller I've read in the past year, with a compelling twist on the story-within-a-story concept and irresistible suspense from the first page to the end.
