(1990) Man-Kzin Wars IV. Man-Kzin Wars XIV (Man-Kzin Wars Series Book 14). That novel, A World Out of Time, is one of my favorites, a book that I re-read every few years. Instead I found a bunch of short stories bound together. Niven in the Intro says he wasn't in the military so he doesn't try to write military scenes. At the time I remember being disappointed but upon further consideration, this seems to have been a wise choice. I read Man-Kzin Wars 1 about 20 years ago and after deciding to re-read or explore some more of Niven's Known Space world-building, figured I'd read the first entry to Man-Kzin again. He is preparing to hand the Reacher series over to his brother and the two are writing this novel together to ease the transition. This book is at least 25 years old. The Bible included corrections for some of the inconsistencies among Niven's work. Conversely, Niven's story Fly-By-Night refers directly to, and summarizes, the events of Telepath's Dance, so it appears he considers that story canonical. The Third War is mentioned in the Ringworld RPG and The Ringworld Engineers. Written by Clandeboye, they are a fictionalized account of the diary of his cousin, Nora Argamentine, a U.N. officer caught by Kzinti who later rebelled against them before being gradually lobotomized. The ebook version I have has the cover of Book 4 of this series, yet the stories inside belonged to Book 1. That said, because these tales are disparate shorts, there is no time for each character to develop. Although I have read comparatively few of his numerous short stories, novels and novel collaborations, I have a special connection to Larry Niven: he has the distinction of being the author of the first science fiction novel that I walked into a bookstore as a young man and purchased for myself. Short stories set in Niven's "Known Space" universe, in the time after Humanity and the Kzin meet and begin their wars that are completed by the time of most of Niven's novels. These books have some of the same aspect as Wild Cards - multiple authors contribute, polish, ret con, and expand. These were quite entertaining and intriguing. There are not many Man-Kzin books in this chronology. Or, for that matter, Netflix? I was quite amused by the author's ability to create sexual tension between the main character--a nerdy ethnologist stuck on a zoo planet--and the sexy Kzin female. Refresh and try again. The ones I remember most were "The Day the Sun Stood Still" (about a day when the earth stopped rotating for a day - proof of the existence of God - and its effect upon society) and "Chains of the Sea (the premise was essentially about how the sea is overtaking humanity and absorbing us back into itself). I first came across the Kzin while reading tales of know space -(Warriors) and they have fascinated me ever since. Niven created a universe he called "Known Space" and nearly all his novels took place within that. Published in 1966, though written long before that, astronauts on a spaceship smoked. One of the hardest factors when writing science-fiction and fantasy novels is giving them a sense of grounding, and this is something that Larry Niven really manages as an author working within the genre. A sortable list in reading order and chronological order with publication date, genre, and rating. Little did I realise that this would be an enormous task that is still partially unfinished. He has multiple series that all take place within the “Bosch Universe” and reading them within that order is imperative. We do our best to get everything listed but the occasional book gets by us. I had seen it for years in the book stores and was always curious to what it was... as the years passed I forgot about it... until recently while browsing on amazon, looking at books. One such series is that of his Man-Kzin Wars series of novels, as they are set within the ‘Known Space’ universe that was previously established in Larry Niven’s prior franchise. Having defeated them once before, they return again to wreak their revenge on the human race, only to find that they can still put up a fight, taking them by surprise and continuing to defeat them every time. Centuries ago, the Kzinti were within inches of conquering mankind until the humans were able to battle back with such inner strength that the Kzinti became overwhelmed. I would recommend this book to sci-fi fans if they want something fun to read. Kinda wish I hadn't. What will become of the first in the series of Man-Kzin Wars?
