    Out of Egypt was a fascinating read & thoroughly engrossing. This definitely won't be the last book I read by Mr. Aciman. Andre Aciman's Out of Egypt is an amazing book, I found it very hard to put down.

    This is Andre Aciman's memoir of growing up Jewish in 1950's Alexandria, Egypt. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 4, 2019. There really are no words I can write to describe the beauty of this book; I wept when the end came. The book is somewhat similar to- The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit, which also covers about the same time frame in Egypt of a different, Jewish family in Cairo, who then emigrated to America when they too could no longer live, safely in Egypt in the 40s and 50s. I had trouble keeping them straight. I also thought the last section revealed things that influenced aspects of Call Me By Your Name which I think were not coincidental. with the power of words to seduce and illuminate a place, a feeling, a world, Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2012.     This is a true story about one, rather large, Jewish family living in Egypt thru WWII, thru the Israeli War of Independence in 1948, and up until Nasser's defeat in the Sinai Campaign of about 1957.

    I also wanted to know how he himself got out of Egypt and how he landed in the U.S. A Gentle, Incisive Biography of a Flamboyant Family, Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2018. The tram routes, Les Délices, the Athineos, the street names &c were all as I was to discover them 30 years after Aciman and his family's departure, when their goods and livlihoods were seized, so I felt (by what right?) Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features.

    An only child, he was showered with attention from a large and eccentric assortment of great aunts and uncles.

    I lack Aciman's irony and wit to counter the grief from having lived sporadically in Egypt's underbelly in Cairo, married and lost an Egyptian husband...Egypt was and possibly still is in some ways, a land where you are instantly transported back to a lifetime that is not known consciously but is at the same time familiar. Every word exudes love and with it a sad sense of loss and nostalgia.

    The book details the various characters in the family, their social lives, and how they blended with the general, Arab population of Egypt for decades. The book is somewhat similar to- The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit, which also covers about the same time frame in Egypt of a different, Jewish family in Cairo, who then emigrated to America when they too could no longer live, safely in Egypt in the 40s and 50s.
    At a time of increased hostility in the middle east it is heartwarming to read of a time when Jews lived in peace with their Muslim and Christian neighbors in Alexandria.

    I have to read it every few months to rediscover the ambiance of a beloved place captured in perfectly crafted phrases . Aciman is as good a writer as I had read.

I liked reading this memoir because I am also from Egypt and I could relate to most events. The aunts and grandmother and even great grandmother hold eccentric opinions.

    But I enjoyed this book and might recommend it. It’s an extraordinary work of language and art.

    The book shines a light on the formative years of Mr. Acimans life while immersing the reader in exciting tales of a now lost way of life. Out of Egypt: A Memoir. It was too rambling and not to the point. I haven't read his novels, but this is a marvelous book. They hail from turkey, Italy, France and England and speak all these languages simultaneously avoiding learning arabic regarding it the language of the servants and the illiterate populace. It's not a book I would have chosen on my own, But I'm glad I read it. But once he enters as a character himself in the book, things straighten out and the reader can immerse himself or herself in the sights and sounds of mid-century Alexandria. It’s an extraordinary work of language and art. I really enjoyed reading this memoir.

    Farrar, Straus & Giroux. Out Of Egypt is made even more lucid by further losses to the country after the Arab Spring.

Unlike any other such biography I have read, it does not have "Poor Us' as a main theme, rather a description of how the actions of the few on both sides, had shattered a beautiful world, which existed, with no regards to the difference between the individuals involved. $20. But I enjoyed this book and might recommend it.

Out of Egypt was a fascinating read & thoroughly engrossing. A memoir of a Jewish family from Alexandria Egypt pre WW II.

    This richly colored memoir chronicles the exploits of a flamboyant Jewish family, from its bold arrival in cosmopolitan Alexandria to its defeated exodus three generations later.

    I would recommend the book to others who may have wondered about the lives and times of Jews living in Arab countries at war with Israel, both before and after it became a legitimate State of Israel. He has a fluid, excellent style.
